Backyard chicken production has played an important role in supplying the food market in both rural markets/supermarkets in cities and towns in Cambodia. The business of raising backyard chickens has contributed significantly to increasing the income and stabilizing the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. the Royal Government of Cambodia has been paying special attention on promoting agricultural sector and agri-businesses, especially backyard chicken production, in order to increase production and supply to domestic markets so that the country is able to mitigate the economic impact on smallholder farmers due to the outbreak of Covid-19 as well as to reduce import from abroad.
During a visit to a chicken farm in Kampot province in 2020, H.E. PAN Sorasak, Minister of Commerce, said, “In order to make the investment between the public and private sectors more efficiently in the chicken value chain, we must work together to make the chicken value chain worthwhile for all producers and beneficiaries involved.” Seeing the opportunity for investment and wanting to help farmers who raise chickens, Mr. Nhel Ty Mony took up the business of selling chicks and collecting chickens from farmers of the AIMS project to sell in the market.
